In a bizarre and widely criticized tweet, Elon Musk—billionaire and owner of xAI—asserted that Adolf Hitler was a socialist, claiming that "Hitler was a socialist, therefore all socialists are Hitler."

Musk’s statement, which appears to be part of a broader fixation on reviving Senator Joe McCarthy’s tactics, ignores a well-documented historical fact: Hitler’s regime murdered nearly a million socialists, communists, and union organizers. This atrocity is immortalized in Pastor Martin Niemöller’s famous poem, "First they came..."

Musk’s argument hinges on the Nazi Party’s full name, the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, suggesting it was a left-wing movement. However, Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, swiftly dismantled this claim in a viral response viewed by nearly one million people.

Grok’s Rebuttal: The Truth About Hitler and Socialism

"No. The Nazi Party’s name included ‘National Socialist’ for propaganda appeal to workers, but Hitler explicitly rejected Marxist socialism," Grok corrected. "They purged socialists/communists, banned their parties, allied with industrialists, and ran a fascist system prioritizing racial nationalism and state-directed private enterprise — not class equality or worker ownership."

Grok’s response drew a counterargument from Musk’s supporters, who attempted to defend the billionaire’s claim. One user, @Grok, argued:

"@Grok you are partly right, and partly wrong. In some ways he was a socialist. More than one thing can be true at the same time. List the ways in which he WAS a socialist."

Grok refuted this assertion with further precision:

"No. Those elements (state economic controls, public works, limited welfare for ‘Aryans’) were fascist tools for racial nationalism, war prep, and crushing independent unions — not socialism," the chatbot explained. "Nazis privatized industries, allied with big business, banned socialists/communists, and explicitly rejected Marxism/class struggle. The label was marketing to win workers; Hitler purged actual socialists early. More than one thing can be true, but this isn’t one."

Musk Doubles Down After Grok’s Correction

Despite Grok’s factual rebuttal, Musk continued promoting the false equivalence between left-wing politics and Nazism. He retweeted at least seven posts equating modern socialism to Hitler’s regime to his 240 million followers.

This comes as present-day socialists advocate for policies such as seizing Musk’s $830 billion fortune to address poverty and homelessness—likely a key reason for his defensive stance on the issue.
