Healthcare Reform Challenges: A Conversation with David Blumenthal on Policy, Politics, and the Path Forward

In a recent “How Would You Fix It?” interview, Julie Rovner of KFF Health News—chief Washington correspondent and host of the What the Health? podcast—sat down with David Blumenthal to dissect the obstacles preventing meaningful reform of the U.S. healthcare system. Blumenthal, a physician, health policy expert, former Obama administration official, and author, shared his perspectives on the challenges and potential pathways forward.

One of the most critical factors in healthcare reform, Blumenthal emphasized, is the role of the U.S. president. “Presidents have a level of authority which is often underappreciated, especially in health care,” he noted. This authority can shape both support for and opposition to new health policies, making presidential leadership a decisive force in the nation’s healthcare trajectory.

Blumenthal and Rovner also explored the historical roots of the U.S.’s failure to achieve universal healthcare.
