Make It Nice: Home Office Organization Advice

Welcome back to Make It Nice, Defector's premier interior design advice column. Today’s session features two home office organization challenges, including a creative request involving a feathered friend.

Selene’s Home Office Dilemma

I work from home in a computer-based job and am also a hobbyist musician. My partner has done an incredible job transforming the rest of our two-bedroom apartment into a cozy, personalized space. However, my office still looks like the cluttered apartments I lived in before we met together.

While my partner has excellent taste in furniture, neither of us knows how to best utilize this space to keep it functional and productive. We need a way to manage the dozens of cables, cords, keyboards, amplifiers, and other equipment that currently dominate the room.

I’d love to create a workspace that doesn’t feel like a cell during the 40 hours a week I spend here. Ideally, it should also be a comfortable place to unwind after work for music and other activities. Right now, everything—gear, cables, and miscellaneous items—is either on the floor, in boxes, or stuffed into bags. I’d prefer a system where I can easily access my music equipment and other belongings without relying on bags or cluttering the desk.

Since we rent, painting or changing the flooring isn’t an option. The office measures roughly 12 feet by 15 feet.

I apologize for the mess in the photo—I wanted to show the space as it truly exists. Thanks for your expert advice!
