Colin Angle, co-founder and former CEO of iRobot, the company behind the iconic Roomba robotic vacuum, has embarked on a new project: creating unconventional robot companions.
Angle’s latest venture, OhmniLabs, has shifted its focus from educational robots to developing small, AI-driven companions designed for interaction. These robots are engineered to engage users without the emotional or care requirements of traditional pets.
The company’s latest creation, the Ohmni Companion, is a tabletop robot equipped with a screen, camera, and AI capabilities. It can recognize faces, respond to voice commands, and even play games or tell stories. Unlike conventional robotic pets, the Ohmni Companion does not require feeding, walking, or emotional reciprocation.
Speaking about the project, Angle stated,
"We wanted to create something that provides companionship without the baggage of a real pet. These robots are designed to be low-maintenance, interactive, and fun."
From Educational Robots to Companions
OhmniLabs originally gained recognition for its Ohmni Robot, an educational robot used in classrooms and remote learning environments. The company has since pivoted to focus on personal robotics, leveraging its expertise in AI and robotics to develop companions for adults and children alike.
The Ohmni Companion is currently available for pre-order, with a starting price of $299. Early reviews highlight its ease of use and engaging interactions, though some users note limitations in its conversational abilities.
Why These Robots Stand Out
Unlike traditional robotic pets, such as Sony’s Aibo or Hasbro’s FurReal Friends, the Ohmni Companion emphasizes interactivity and customization. Users can personalize the robot’s voice, appearance, and even its personality traits through an accompanying app.
The robot’s design prioritizes accessibility, featuring a 3.5-inch screen, a high-definition camera, and a built-in speaker and microphone. It also supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing integration with smart home devices.
Potential Applications
- Elderly care: Providing companionship for seniors who may not be able to care for a pet.
- Children’s entertainment: Engaging kids with interactive storytelling and games.
- Remote work and learning: Enhancing virtual interactions in professional and educational settings.
While the Ohmni Companion is not a replacement for human interaction, it offers a novel solution for those seeking companionship without the responsibilities of a pet. As AI and robotics continue to advance, such innovations may redefine how we perceive and interact with technology in our daily lives.
