Jason Lowery Appointed to Key Role at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command

Jason Lowery, former Deputy Director of Technology & Innovation at the United States Space Force and author of Softwar: A Novel Theory on Power Projection and the National Strategic Significance of Bitcoin, has been appointed Special Assistant to the Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.

New Role Focuses on Strategic Advising

In a LinkedIn announcement, Lowery expressed his honor in accepting the position, stating:

"In this new position, I will directly advise and report to the Combatant Commander on strategic priorities affecting the Department of Defense and the Indo-Pacific region."

Lowery added, "It’s a humbling responsibility during a critical time for our national security posture. I’m grateful for the trust placed in me to support this level of leadership, and excited to contribute to the mission."

Bitcoin as a Military Technology

Lowery gained prominence for his argument that Bitcoin represents a transformative shift in military technology. He posits that power projection in this new landscape is determined not by traditional means such as bullets, missiles, or drones, but by controlling hashing power—the computational backbone of Bitcoin’s proof-of-work protocol.

According to Lowery’s thesis, entities that dominate the hash rate can:

  • Guarantee the confirmation of their own Bitcoin transactions.
  • In extreme cases, interfere with the confirmation of adversaries’ transactions.

This perspective frames Bitcoin as a foundational change in military technology, comparable to historical advancements like gunpowder or aviation.

Geopolitical Context and Strategic Implications

The announcement follows Iran’s statement to the Financial Times that it would accept Bitcoin for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. While no implementation of the so-called "Bitcoin Toll of Hormuz" has been reported, the proposal has drawn international attention and reached policymakers in Washington.

Though the Strait of Hormuz falls under the jurisdiction of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), Lowery’s appointment underscores the growing recognition of Bitcoin’s strategic value in geopolitics. His advisory role will cover a vast region, including China, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean—areas heavily dependent on Gulf oil transiting through Hormuz. Reports indicate that 42% of China’s oil imports originated from Gulf states prior to recent conflicts.
