In a recently filed federal lawsuit, Murray v. Alphabet, Inc., a Utah man accuses Google’s AI Overview of fabricating false sex crime allegations that have severely damaged his personal and professional life.
The lawsuit, removed to federal court on June 11, 2024, alleges that the AI-generated statements appeared only in Google’s AI Overview and were not derived from any existing online sources. Unlike traditional cases where inaccuracies stem from flawed input data, the plaintiff claims the AI algorithm composed the allegations itself.
The fabricated allegations have triggered widespread backlash, including:
- Hostile messages, phone calls, and in-person confrontations demanding explanations.
- Accusations from family, friends, and even his romantic partner’s family, who questioned his character based solely on the AI-generated claims.
- Public humiliation in local businesses, where strangers confronted him about supposed "charges" or made disparaging remarks.
- Loss of professional relationships, including clients canceling contracts and threats of bankruptcy.
- A home cleaning service abruptly stopping work after the cleaner’s mother spread the false accusations in town.
Despite Mr. Murray’s repeated attempts to clarify that the allegations were entirely false, many individuals refused to believe his explanation or allow him to respond. The statements have had a devastating impact on both his personal and professional life, with financial losses being the most immediate consequence.
