Lexus has officially confirmed the debut of a new SUV scheduled for May 6, 2026. While the official name remains unannounced, industry speculation and trademark filings strongly suggest the model will be named the Lexus TZ.
Positioned as a premium sibling to the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV, the Lexus TZ will share its underpinnings with Toyota’s three-row electric SUV. However, Lexus is expected to differentiate the TZ with a more luxurious design and enhanced features.
Exterior Design: A Refined Take on the Highlander EV
Dark teaser images released by Lexus reveal the SUV’s silhouette, which closely mirrors the Highlander’s proportions but with a distinct roofline that slopes downward toward the rear. The TZ will feature a redesigned body with a new lighting signature and a hood design reminiscent of the rugged Lexus GX.
Spy shots indicate the TZ will boast split LED headlights, a covered single-frame grille, toned fenders, sculpted doors, and large alloy wheels. Despite these updates, the greenhouse and door handles are expected to carry over from the Toyota Highlander EV.
Interior Upgrades: More Luxury, Same Tech
The Lexus TZ’s interior is anticipated to feature higher-quality materials compared to its Toyota counterpart. However, it may retain some shared technology, including a 14-inch infotainment display. The SUV is expected to offer a three-row layout with seating for up to six passengers.
Electric Powertrain and Performance
The Lexus TZ will likely share the same footprint as the Toyota Highlander EV, which measures 5,050 mm (198.8 inches) in length and rides on a 3,050 mm (120.1 inches) wheelbase. The platform is based on Toyota’s modified TNGA-K architecture.
In 2023, Lexus filed trademarks for the TZ450e and TZ550e, hinting at two potential electric powertrain options. The Toyota Highlander EV is available in both FWD and AWD configurations, producing 221 hp (FWD) and 338 hp (AWD). Battery options include a 77 kWh unit and a larger 95.8 kWh pack, offering up to 320 miles (515 km) of range.
Pricing and Competition
The Lexus TZ will compete with luxury electric SUVs such as the Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 9, and Volvo EX90. Pricing is expected to exceed the Toyota Highlander EV, which is projected to start in the low to mid $50,000s.
Global Debut and Production Details
The unveiling of the Lexus TZ will be broadcast live on YouTube on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 10:30 am JST (which translates to Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 9:30 pm EDT). The SUV will be sold in both North America and the Japanese market.
Reports indicate that production may occur in the United States or Japan, though the final manufacturing location has not been confirmed.
