Volkswagen has officially introduced the ID. Polo GTI, marking the first electric iteration of the iconic GTI badge. Unveiled at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, the new model retains the hot hatch spirit while embracing Volkswagen’s electric vehicle (EV) future.

The ID. Polo GTI is powered by a single electric motor delivering 223 hp (226 PS / 166 kW) and 214 lb-ft (290 Nm) of torque to the front wheels. This powertrain enables a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in 6.8 seconds, though its top speed is limited to 109 mph (175 km/h). In comparison, the gas-powered Golf GTI completes the same sprint in 5.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

The GTI variant is more powerful than the top-spec ID. Polo, which produces 208 hp (211 PS / 155 kW). However, this performance comes with a tradeoff in range. The ID. Polo GTI’s 52 kWh net NMC battery is rated for up to 263 miles (424 km) on the WLTP cycle, compared to the standard ID. Polo’s 283 miles (455 km).

Charging capabilities are robust, with support for up to 105 kW DC fast charging. Volkswagen claims a 10-80% charge can be achieved in approximately 24 minutes. AC charging is rated at 11 kW.

Key Features of the ID. Polo GTI

  • Electronic Limited-Slip Differential (LSD): Enhances traction and handling.
  • Adaptive DCC Sports Suspension: Adjusts damping for optimal performance.
  • Progressive Steering: Improves maneuverability and responsiveness.
  • 19-inch Alloy Wheels: Standard fitment for a sporty aesthetic.
  • Premium Sports Seats: Designed for comfort and support during spirited driving.
  • IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix Headlights: Offer advanced illumination and adaptive lighting.
  • GTI Driving Mode: Activates a dedicated driving profile with aggressive motor response, steering, and chassis settings.

The GTI mode transforms the vehicle’s character, with red ambient lighting, dynamic graphics, and the availability of launch control. Volkswagen even enhances the experience with a combustion-style soundtrack piped into the cabin.

What’s Missing? The ID. Polo Clubsport

While the ID. Polo GTI lacks the fake gearshifts featured in the 2023 ID. Concept GTI, these elements are expected to appear in the upcoming ID. Polo Clubsport. Reports suggest this more hardcore variant is in development, with a potential 2027 release. The Clubsport may also incorporate the concept’s black plastic arch trims, a nod to the original Golf GTI, which are absent on the current GTI.

The ID. Polo Clubsport is expected to retain the concept’s aggressive styling, including a full-width red stripe across the nose, a 3D GTI badge, and honeycomb-patterned details.
