Stellantis and Dongfeng Motor Corporation have announced a new agreement to produce upcoming Jeep-branded electrified off-roaders at a facility in Wuhan, China, starting in 2027.
The China-built Jeeps are slated for export to global markets, including Europe, though Stellantis has not confirmed plans to sell them in the United States.
This development marks a significant shift for Jeep, a brand historically associated with rugged Americana and military heritage. The new partnership expands the 30-year collaboration between Stellantis and Dongfeng through their Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën Automobile (DPCA) joint venture. The Wuhan plant will manufacture two new Peugeot electric vehicles alongside two new Jeep electrified off-roaders.
Stellantis has not yet disclosed the specific Jeep models, referring to them only as “new-energy vehicles.” These could include fully electric SUVs, plug-in hybrids, or a combination of both. Given Jeep’s aggressive electrification strategy, the new models are expected to align closely with China’s rapidly evolving EV ecosystem.
Peugeot’s Futuristic EV Flagships
Peugeot’s contribution to the partnership includes upcoming models inspired by the Concept 6 and Concept 8, unveiled at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. The Concept 6 is a sleek sedan, while the Concept 8 is a large flagship SUV, both designed to bolster Peugeot’s global ambitions.
The total investment for the project exceeds €1 billion (approximately $1.16 billion), with Stellantis contributing around €130 million ($151 million). Additional support is provided by local government authorities in Hubei province.
Stellantis CEO’s Statement on the Partnership
"We are ready to further leverage our strengths and introduce all-new vehicles with cutting-edge EV technologies from brands that customers worldwide trust and love." — Antonio Filosa, CEO of Stellantis
The announcement raises questions about consumer perceptions of a Jeep made in China versus traditional U.S.-built models, such as the 2026 Wrangler America250 Edition.
