Liberland, a self-proclaimed micronation led by Justin Sun, has bestowed its highest state honor upon Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. The award, titled the First Class Order of Merit of the Star of Liberland, recognizes Buterin’s extraordinary technical achievements in blockchain and his contributions to decentralized societal models.
The medal was presented during ETHPrague 2026, where Buterin participated in a Network State event organized by the micronation. Liberland’s official statement highlighted Buterin’s role in advancing new ideas about societal organization, including his focus on pop-up cities, decentralized societies, and network states.
An image shared by Liberland shows a smiling Buterin holding the star-shaped medal, which appears to draw inspiration from the Commonwealth’s Order of Merit, a century-old award recognizing distinguished service.
Justin Sun’s Role in Liberland
Despite not receiving the highest distinction, Justin Sun, the founder of Tron, serves as prime minister of Liberland. Sun was first elected in October 2024 and has since been re-elected seven times.
During his initial campaign, Sun emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with the United States. He also highlighted his investments in World Liberty Financial (WLFI), a crypto firm linked to former President Donald Trump, and praised US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff as an ally.
However, recent disputes have strained these relationships. Zach Witkoff, Witkoff’s son and a co-founder of WLFI, has accused Sun of attempting to “torch” the firm, as both parties have filed lawsuits against each other.
Liberland’s Recent Developments
Beyond its diplomatic and blockchain activities, Liberland has made headlines for its structural resilience. The micronation recently clarified that it was unaffected by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake in the Donbas region. Vít Jedlička, Liberland’s president, stated,
“Every structure we build in Liberland is designed with events like this in mind.”These structures include a tent beach bar and a treehouse.
