Maine Governor Janet Mills announced on Thursday that she was suspending her campaign for the U.S. Senate, citing a lack of financial resources to secure a victory.

Her decision follows months of campaigning and comes after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) actively encouraged her to enter the race. Despite Schumer’s support, Mills trailed behind progressive insurgent Graham Platner in both fundraising and polling.

With Mills’ withdrawal, Platner is now positioned to become the Democratic nominee in the race against Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins.

This is a developing story and additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
