Meta is now tracking the on-screen activity of its US-based employees to improve its artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The company has implemented a tool called the Model Capability Initiative (MCI) on employees’ work computers, which monitors interactions such as mouse movements, clicks, keystrokes, and occasional screenshots.

The data collected through MCI will be used to train Meta’s AI models to better simulate human-computer interactions. This includes automating routine work tasks similar to those performed by Meta’s employees. According to a report by Reuters, the information gathered will not be utilized for evaluating employee performance.

“If we're building AI to be able to do the work that our employees do, then we need to measure how good it is at doing that work,” a Meta spokesperson told Reuters.

Meta’s initiative reflects a broader trend among tech companies to leverage internal workforce data for AI development. The company has not disclosed whether the MCI tool will be expanded beyond its US-based workforce.
