Adam Sandler will return for ‘Grown Ups 3’, a sequel in development at Netflix, the streaming giant announced during its upfront presentation on Wednesday.
Sandler will co-write the script with Tim Herlihy, his longtime collaborator. Kyle Newacheck, who directed ‘Happy Gilmore 2’, has been tapped to direct the new installment.
The project is also being produced by Sandler alongside Jackie Sandler, Jack Giarraputo, and Tim Herlihy. Kevin Grady and Judit Maull serve as executive producers.
Will the Original Cast Return?
It remains unclear whether Kevin James, David Spade, and Chris Rock will reprise their roles in ‘Grown Ups 3’.
‘Grown Ups 2’: A Box Office Hit Despite Poor Reviews
The last film in the franchise, ‘Grown Ups 2’, was released by Sony Pictures in 2013. The movie followed a group of friends—Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade, and Chris Rock—reuniting for a weekend in New England.
Critics delivered scathing reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a dismal 8% rating. TheWrap’s Alonso Duralde criticized the humor, stating:
“The jokes here are asinine, immature, offensive to women and to almost everyone else on the planet who isn’t a middle-aged heterosexual male.”
Duralde also mocked the film’s recurring cast member Nick Swardson, adding that the comedy was weaker than an inflatable raft sharing screen time in two scenes.
Despite the harsh reviews, ‘Grown Ups 2’ was a commercial success, grossing $246,984,278 worldwide against an $80 million budget.
