New Mexico’s attorney general, Raul Torrez, is escalating legal action against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, following a recent $375 million jury verdict. In the second phase of a landmark trial, the state is now seeking even more substantial reforms through a proposed $3.7 billion abatement plan.

On Monday, David Ackerman, an attorney representing New Mexico, presented the state’s demands to the court. The plan calls for Meta to fund critical programs for mental health providers, law enforcement, and educators. Additionally, the state is requesting sweeping changes to Meta’s platforms, including stricter measures to protect minors.

The proposed changes to Meta’s services include:

  • Age verification for all users in New Mexico;
  • A 99% detection rate for new child sexual abuse material (CSAM);
  • Elimination of late-night and school-day notifications for teenage users in the state.
