LONDON — Social media platform X has committed to reviewing reported posts containing hate content more quickly in the UK, according to the communications regulator Ofcom.

The pledge comes as Ofcom intensifies its oversight of X’s compliance with online safety regulations, including the Online Safety Act, which mandates stricter measures to combat illegal and harmful content.

Ofcom’s announcement follows a broader investigation into X’s moderation practices, particularly regarding hate speech and misinformation. The regulator has previously raised concerns about the platform’s ability to address harmful content promptly.

Ofcom’s statement:

"We welcome X’s commitment to faster review times for reported hate content. However, we will continue to monitor their progress closely to ensure compliance with the Online Safety Act."

Under the Online Safety Act, platforms like X are required to remove illegal content, including hate speech, within strict timeframes. Failure to comply could result in significant fines or other enforcement actions.

X has not yet disclosed specific timelines for implementing the changes, but Ofcom has indicated that it expects measurable improvements in the coming months.
