Illumination’s Minions & Monsters is nearly here. The latest installment in the Despicable Me franchise premieres as the opening movie at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 21, before hitting theaters on July 1.
The latest trailer offers a glimpse of the upcoming chaos. Watch it below.
Set in the 1920s, the film follows the Minions as they attempt to make it in Hollywood. To do so, they create a horror movie concept and decide to fill it with actual monsters. What could possibly go wrong?
The trailer suggests a winning blend of Damien Chazelle’s Babylon and Lovecraftian horror, featuring a charming new goblin character as part of the crew.
Voice cast includes:
- Trey Parker
- Jesse Eisenberg
- Christoph Waltz
- Jeff Bridges
- Allison Janney
- Zooey Deutch
- Bobby Moynihan
- Phil LaMarr
- Pierre Coffin (who voices the Minions and directed and co-wrote Minions & Monsters)
Pierre Coffin also directed the first three Despicable Me movies, the first Minions movie, and has voiced the Minions in every franchise entry. The previous installment, 2024’s Despicable Me 4, also debuted at Annecy.
Illumination is fresh off a massive year, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie—produced alongside Nintendo—nearing $900 million in global box office revenue.
Minions & Monsters is one of several major animated features opening this summer, alongside Toy Story 5, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, and the highly anticipated Coyote vs. Acme.
Minions & Monsters opens in theaters on July 1.
