Note: This article contains spoilers from Widow’s Bay Season 1, Episode 4.

Widow’s Bay has aired for three weeks, and the Apple TV series has already delivered one of the best episodes of television this year. The episode in question, this week’s “Beach Reads,” is an unexpected detour that temporarily pauses the momentum built by last week’s “Inaugural Swim.”

Written by Mackenzie Dohr and directed by Sam Donovan—veteran of Severance and Down Cemetery Road—the episode follows Patricia (Kate O’Flynn), the introverted assistant to Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys). Patricia meticulously plans a cocktail party, burdened by social anxiety and ridicule from former high school friends who doubt her survival of an attack by the infamous Widow’s Bay serial killer, “The Boogeyman.”

Early in the episode, Patricia discovers a strange self-help book in her bookmobile and follows its instructions, which revolve around throwing an extravagant party and being the perfect hostess. However, the book is not what it seems. Viewers uncover clues—Patricia’s unsettling obsession and subtle visual cues, such as guests frozen in place with open mouths—before the frenzied climax reveals its true nature: a witch’s spell book.

The Shocking Climax of ‘Beach Reads’

After Patricia delivers a spotlight toast at the party, she retreats to the kitchen, drinks the event’s “punch,” and is confronted by Sheriff Bechir (Kevin Carroll), who stares in horror and asks, “Patricia … what the f—k are you doing?”

The episode cuts to Patricia’s cutting board, revealing a horrific scene: dead, dissected rodents, witchy ingredients, and a punch bowl filled with animal blood. The “tiara” Patricia wore is exposed as a grotesque headpiece made of antlers, teeth, and rodent fur.

It’s a chilling, surreal moment—one of the most memorable in television this year. Katie Dippold, creator of Widow’s Bay, reveals the episode’s origins:

“One of the writers had this idea of a self-help book that goes wrong, and it started a conversation about, ‘What are Patricia’s fears?’ One thing I always think about with Patricia is the thing that is scarier to her than the idea of dying is the idea of dying and no one caring about it. That brought in the one thing we always try to do.”

Why ‘Beach Reads’ Stands Out

  • Unpredictable Twist: The episode subverts expectations with its witchcraft reveal, making it a standout in the series.
  • Performance Highlights: Kate O’Flynn’s portrayal of Patricia’s unraveling psyche is gripping, while Kevin Carroll’s shocked reaction as Sheriff Bechir delivers a career-defining moment.
  • Visual Storytelling: Sam Donovan’s direction uses subtle cues—frozen guests, eerie lighting—to build dread before the explosive finale.
  • Creator’s Insight: Katie Dippold’s pitch about Patricia’s deepest fears shaped the episode’s psychological horror.

Widow’s Bay Season 1, Episode 4, “Beach Reads,” is now streaming on Apple TV.
