Noah Wyle, the star and executive producer of The Pitt, has shut down speculation about a potential spinoff centered on the show’s night shift characters.

Speaking on the A Lot More podcast on Thursday, Wyle said,

"I said off-handedly the other day that I think we’re getting enough night shift. And I think you want more, but you’re getting what I think is appropriate."

His remarks drew criticism, with some calling his stance "patronizing and pretentious". However, Wyle stood by his position, adding,

"I still don’t think you need more night shift. Those are great characters. It’s a wonderful energy."

Wyle, best known for his role as Dr. John Carter on ER, explained that real-life night shifts in emergency rooms are often less dramatic than portrayed on television.

"You know who works mostly night shift? Mothers. Because they like to be free for their kids [and] to be home during the day. So, it’s a lot less wild and woolly, and a lot more boring and sedate than you would think."

Despite acknowledging the appeal of the night shift crew—led by fan-favorite Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy)—Wyle warned that a spinoff could weaken the original series.

"I feel like when you have something that’s a really good thing and it’s working for you, you don’t want to dissipate it too quickly. You don’t want to bleed it off into other narratives and franchise it out, because I think you kind of dilute the potency a little bit and you get everybody overfamiliar with the arena to where it loses a little bit of its specialness."

Looking ahead to The Pitt Season 3, Wyle revealed at PaleyFest LA 2026 in April that filming will likely take place in the fall, with the show exploring "cold weather and different cases."

Seasons 1 and 2 of The Pitt are currently available to stream on HBO Max.
