The New York Giants made the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, selecting tackle Francis Mauioga with the selection they acquired from the Bengals in the Dexter Lawrence trade.
According to Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports, two NFC teams attempted to trade up to the No. 9 pick with the Cleveland Browns. The Browns had previously moved down from No. 6 to No. 9 in a trade that allowed the Kansas City Chiefs to select cornerback Mansoor Delane.
The unnamed NFC teams were speculating on who the Giants planned to select and tried to secure their target before New York could make their pick. This mirrors a similar move by the Philadelphia Eagles, who traded up from No. 23 to No. 20 to select receiver Makai Lemon ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The risk of acquiring a pick before it is on the clock was highlighted by these efforts. While the Giants avoided being leapfrogged, the attempts by the two NFC teams underscore how teams will move up in the draft order to secure their preferred players before competitors can.
