Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon made it clear this week that his defensive strategy in Wisconsin won’t resemble the schemes he implemented in Arizona or Philadelphia. Speaking to reporters, Gannon emphasized that the Packers’ defensive playbook will be developed in Green Bay, not transplanted from previous stops.
“We develop the playbook when we get here,” Gannon said, per the team’s official website. “I don’t really get caught up in what I’d done before. I just believe you’ve got to continually every year try to adapt and solve problems with your guys in mind.”
Gannon’s philosophy centers on execution over scheme. “Before scheme, I truly believe it’s not what you play, it’s how you play,” he explained. “It’s a players’ game, man. Everyone fits into winning. Everyone’s role might be different, but it all fits into winning, and you have to perform your role at a high level.”
The Packers have signed a few players who previously worked under Gannon, including linebacker Zaire Franklin and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. However, Gannon indicated that familiarity won’t provide an advantage, as the team will start fresh in Green Bay.
