A recent incident at Oakland International Airport in California illustrates the complications that arise when attempting to transport a humanoid robot on a commercial flight. During a trip from Oakland to San Diego, a team from Elite Event Robotics traveled with Bebop, a 77-pound robot resembling a Unitree G1.
Why the Robot Couldn’t Be Checked as Luggage
The drive from Oakland to San Diego typically takes 7.5 hours, making air travel a practical option. However, Southwest Airlines refused to check Bebop as luggage due to weight restrictions. As a result, the team purchased a separate seat for the robot, which led to unforeseen complications.
Flight Attendants Raise Safety Concerns
Flight attendants expressed legitimate concerns about Bebop’s behavior and safety during the flight. According to Ben-Abraham, a staffer with Elite Event Robotics, airline staff questioned the robot’s battery type and other specifications.
"They come and start asking, ‘what kind of batteries does it have? What’s going on with this? X, Y, and Z.’ They want to see it," Elite Event Robotics staffer Ben-Abraham told local media. "Meanwhile, I’m watching his flight, and I keep seeing online: ‘runway delay.’"
The back-and-forth lasted over an hour, during which the plane remained idling on the runway. Southwest ultimately confiscated Bebop’s lithium battery, citing violations of the airline’s size restrictions.
