Patrick Mahomes' Recovery Progress Surprises Chiefs Front Office
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is defying expectations in his recovery from a December ACL tear, according to general manager Brett Veach. Speaking over the weekend, Veach revealed that Mahomes is not only on track but potentially ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation.
Mahomes' Unwavering Commitment to Recovery
Veach emphasized Mahomes' relentless dedication to his recovery during an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio:
"I will say this, I think it wouldn’t surprise you guys, the way it’s been really inspiring to just see — in my mind, I’ve been there before with Pat, he had that dislocated knee [in 2019] and worked his tail off, and came back in three weeks. I knew this bump in the road wouldn’t slow him down at all."
Daily Discipline Sets Mahomes Apart
Veach highlighted Mahomes' extraordinary work ethic, noting the quarterback's presence in the Chiefs' facility and his proactive approach to recovery:
- Mahomes is in the Chiefs' building every single day
- He takes a team trainer with him even during personal trips, such as weekend family visits to Dallas
- Despite his achievements, Mahomes chooses to train with the team rather than independently
Chiefs Expect Full Participation in Training Camp
Veach acknowledged that Mahomes' progress could lead to challenges for the coaching staff:
"So, needless to say, he’s way ahead of schedule. I think the biggest challenge we’re going to have is protecting him against himself, because I’m sure when we get to St. Joseph, Missouri, for training camp, he’s going to want to be full go. But we’re going to have to hold him back a little."
Andy Reid Considers Mahomes' OTAs Participation
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid previously indicated that the team is evaluating Mahomes' potential involvement in Organized Team Activities (OTAs), despite his injury. Veach's comments suggest Mahomes will push to be a full participant when training camp begins in late July.
No Timetable Set, But Optimism Grows
While Veach avoided setting a specific return timeline, he expressed confidence in Mahomes' competitive drive and current recovery status:
"And, again, I don’t want to put a timetable on it. But I think you guys know the kind of person and competitor Pat is, and I would just say, we’re in a really good place right now."
