The New England Patriots addressed their quarterback depth in the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting Texas Tech’s Behren Morton in the seventh round. Morton, chosen with the 234th overall pick, becomes the ninth quarterback selected in this year’s draft, though LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier is not among them.

Prior to the selection, the Patriots had only Tommy DeVito as the backup to projected starter Drake Maye. Morton’s addition provides additional competition and insurance at the position.

Morton’s College Career and 2025 Season

Behren Morton concluded his collegiate career at Texas Tech after spending five seasons in Lubbock. He started 36 games over that span, compiling a 26-10 record. His career totals include:

  • 62.8% completion rate
  • 8,989 passing yards
  • 71 touchdowns
  • 28 interceptions

During the 2025 season, Morton appeared in 12 games, throwing for 2,780 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. His season was cut short by a hairline fracture in his right leg, which caused him to miss two contests.

Patriots’ Draft Strategy and Future Outlook

The selection of Morton reflects the Patriots’ commitment to building quarterback depth, particularly after drafting Drake Maye in the first round of the 2026 draft. With Morton now in the fold, the Patriots have added a player with starting experience and a proven track record in the Big 12 conference.

The Patriots will now evaluate Morton alongside DeVito and other quarterbacks in training camp as they prepare for the 2026 season.
