Yum Brands is following through on its commitment to close hundreds of underperforming Pizza Hut restaurants in the United States. Three months after announcing plans to shutter 250 locations by the first half of 2026, the fast-food chain’s U.S. presence is shrinking, according to a Fast Company analysis.

The review, which examined local media reports, online review platforms like Yelp and Google Reviews, and Pizza Hut’s store locator tool, identified more than 50 locations that have closed in recent months. The actual number of closures is likely higher. Ranjith Roy, Chief Financial Officer of Yum Brands, confirmed during an earnings call in February that the targeted closures were expected to be completed by July 1, 2026.

These closures are part of Pizza Hut’s “Hut Forward” turnaround strategy, which also includes increased marketing support and technological upgrades for select existing stores. Yum Brands has not publicly disclosed the names or locations of the affected restaurants. Fast Company has reached out to Yum Brands for comment.

Global Growth vs. U.S. Decline

While Pizza Hut is reducing its U.S. footprint, the brand continues to expand internationally. Last year, it opened 1,184 new locations across 65 countries. However, the United States now accounts for a smaller share of the division’s total sales—40% at the end of 2025, down from 43% four years prior. Meanwhile, sales in China have grown from 16% to 19% during the same period.

Yum Brands, which also owns KFC and Taco Bell, has seen its stock slightly outperform the broader market in 2026. As of Monday, shares of the Louisville-based restaurant group (NYSE: YUM) were up roughly 5% for the year.

Potential Sale Looms Over Pizza Hut

In November 2025, Yum Brands announced a strategic review of Pizza Hut, which could result in a sale. Investors are awaiting an update on the company’s progress when it reports earnings on Wednesday.

States and Cities Hit Hardest by Closures

Pizza Hut locations have been disappearing rapidly across the country, with California, Pennsylvania, and Ohio among the states most affected. Some closures have left entire towns without a Pizza Hut, including a location in Dillon, Montana, which was reported closed in March 2026 by users in a local Facebook group.

Follow-up calls to recently shuttered locations revealed that some former Pizza Hut phone numbers have already been reassigned to other businesses. For example, the number for a closed Pizza Hut in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania now rings at a nearby Domino’s Pizza.

Pizza Hut’s Global Footprint in 2026

As of December 2025, Pizza Hut operated just under 20,000 locations worldwide, with 68% of them located outside the United States, according to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Over 99% of the stores in Yum Brands’ Pizza Hut Division are operated by franchisees.
