The Los Angeles Rams have confirmed Matthew Stafford as their starting quarterback for the 2024 season. However, the team’s backup quarterback position remains undecided, with Stetson Bennett currently the only other quarterback on the roster.
Jimmy Garoppolo, who served as Stafford’s backup for the past two seasons, is now contemplating retirement. Despite this, Rams head coach Sean McVay has expressed the team’s interest in Garoppolo returning for another year.
"You leave the door open. You don’t want to press. We want to be able to give him his time, and he knows where we stand."
Garoppolo, 34, was originally selected by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. After a trade to the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, he became the team’s starting quarterback and remained with the franchise until 2022. He spent the 2023 season with the Las Vegas Raiders before becoming an unrestricted free agent. Now, at 34, Garoppolo is evaluating whether to pursue a 13th season in the NFL.
