Rivian has established itself as a leader in automotive software innovation, earning a $5 billion investment from Volkswagen Group for its clean-sheet approach to electric vehicle electronic architecture. Despite not supporting Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, Rivian’s in-house infotainment system remains highly regarded by owners.
To bridge the gap left by the absence of phone mirroring—which enables hands-free use of Siri or Google Assistant—Rivian has introduced a new AI digital assistant in its latest software update, 2026.15. This update is compatible with both older Gen1 Rivians (model-year 2024 and older) and newer Gen2 models.
How the Rivian AI Assistant Works
The Rivian Assistant is deeply integrated into the vehicle’s systems, providing seamless functionality across multiple touchpoints. Owners can activate the assistant in three ways:
- A dedicated button on the steering wheel
- An icon on the infotainment display
- A voice trigger phrase, such as “Hey Rivian” or “OK, Rivian”
The AI assistant operates independently of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, offering a native solution tailored to Rivian’s software ecosystem.
Availability and Requirements
The Rivian Assistant is available to all owners who have an active Connect+ subscription or are currently on a trial for the service. The update, 2026.15, is designed to enhance the driving experience by providing intuitive, hands-free assistance directly through the vehicle’s built-in systems.
