Steelers owner Art Rooney II revealed that he anticipated learning whether Aaron Rodgers would play for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season before the NFL Draft. However, that timeline didn’t materialize. Speaking on NFL Network, Rooney maintained that the team remains in close contact with Rodgers and expects clarity in the coming weeks.
“We’ve been in contact with Aaron on a regular basis,” Rooney said. “He’s been keeping us up to date on his plans. Even though I thought we’d have concluded by now, I think we will come to a conclusion here in the next few weeks.”
Rooney also addressed the Steelers’ recent decision to apply an unrestricted free agent tender to Rodgers. He clarified that this move was purely strategic, aimed at securing a potential compensatory draft pick if Rodgers signs with another team—a scenario the Steelers do not anticipate.
“The main thing the tender gives us is the potential for a comp pick if Aaron would choose to go to another team. We don’t expect that, but by the same token you never know,” Rooney explained. “It was just something we had an opportunity to protect if needed. Not a real big deal, but just something that, if in the unlikely event he goes somewhere else, we are eligible for a comp pick in that situation.”
The primary focus for the Steelers, however, remains Rodgers’ decision on whether he will suit up for the team in 2024. Rooney expressed confidence that this uncertainty will be resolved in the near term.
