Subnautica 2 entered early access today with sky-high expectations, fueled by over five million wishlists. Those expectations were not just met—they were exceeded.

Within two hours of its Steam launch, Subnautica 2 reached a peak of over 467,000 concurrent players. This figure remains dynamic, as the number of active players is expected to fluctuate, particularly as more gamers purchase and log in over the weekend.

Just one hour after launch, developer Unknown Worlds announced that the game had already sold one million copies. This milestone translates to roughly one in five wishlisted players purchasing the game on day one alone.

Describing the early access launch as the franchise’s "biggest" to date, the developers highlighted that Subnautica 2 offers "the most amount of content" in the series. Players can explore over 10 biomes and enjoy approximately 14 to 20 hours of gameplay. However, as an early access title, this represents only the beginning of the experience.

The roadmap includes several planned updates:

  • Update 1.1: Focuses on quality-of-life improvements.
  • Update 1.2: Introduces co-op enhancements, including proximity voice chat, emotes, and a revive system.

The game is now available in early access for $29.99. Based on the first-hour sales figures, this amounts to approximately $30 million in revenue generated within a few hours of launch.
