Tesla’s fleet of vehicles equipped with the company’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) (FSD) system has now driven over 10 billion miles, according to Tesla’s updated safety page. This milestone brings the company closer to Elon Musk’s previously stated goal for achieving ‘safe unsupervised’ driving.

However, this does not mean Tesla owners can suddenly rely on their vehicles for fully autonomous operation. FSD remains a Level 2 system, which requires a fully attentive human driver to monitor the road and be ready to take control at any moment.

In January 2024, Musk outlined a threshold for what he described as ‘safe unsupervised’ driving. The milestone of 10 billion miles represents a significant step toward that benchmark, though Tesla has not yet confirmed whether the threshold has been fully met.

Tesla’s FSD system continues to evolve, with the company frequently updating its software to improve performance and safety. Despite these advancements, regulatory and safety standards still require human oversight for now.
