As legalized sports betting expands across the U.S., its growing normalization has led to new challenges—particularly for athletes who came of age during the rapid expansion of legal wagering.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby will check into a residential treatment program to address a gambling addiction. The decision follows reports that Sorsby placed thousands of online bets on various sports.

The NCAA is currently investigating Sorsby’s betting activity, which reportedly included wagers on Indiana games during his redshirt freshman year in 2022. Notably, Sorsby did not play in any of the games he bet on.

Sorsby transferred from Cincinnati to Texas Tech in February. The move prompted Cincinnati to file a breach of contract lawsuit against him, seeking $1 million in damages.

Gambling’s Growing Impact on College Sports

This case highlights the broader risks athletes and teams face as sports betting becomes ubiquitous. From widespread advertisements to pervasive betting promotions, gambling has woven itself into the fabric of modern sports—often with devastating consequences.
