The Bastl Kalimba has already surpassed its funding goals, securing over $700,000 on Kickstarter.

Despite its kalimba-like appearance, the Bastl Kalimba is first and foremost a synthesizer. Its tines produce minimal acoustic sound, serving primarily as touch and velocity-sensitive triggers for the internal synth engine. While an internal microphone allows blending in subtle acoustic tones, the instrument’s core sound is driven by a hybrid of physical modeling and FM synthesis.

Unlike traditional kalimbas, the Bastl Kalimba delivers sonically versatile output, ranging from plucked tones to lush pads. Built-in effects further expand its capabilities, including delay, reverb, and distortion, among others.

The instrument’s design cleverly merges the tactile familiarity of a kalimba with the creative potential of a modern synthesizer, offering features exclusive to synths while maintaining the intuitive playability of a thumb piano.
