The Summer Hikaru Died began as a poignant love story between Yoshiki Tsujinaka and Hikaru Indou, the latter being an entity inhabiting the body of his late friend and classmate. However, recent volumes have expanded the narrative to explore supernatural themes, the history of Kubitachi Village, and the true nature of "Hikaru."
Despite the growing cast, Yoshiki and Hikaru remained the central focus. This changes in Volume 7, where the couple’s mission to seal interdimensional breaches—"holes" allowing impurities to slip into their village—shifts the spotlight to supporting characters and their extraordinary abilities.
New Threats and Unlikely Heroes
With Yoshiki and "Hikaru" dedicated to protecting Kubitachi Village, they are no longer alone in their fight. Their friend and classmate, Yuta Maki, encounters a disturbing impurity: disembodied legs, signaling a breach near his home. As Yoshiki and Hikaru investigate, Rie Kurebayashi, a housewife medium, steps in to guard Yuta. Rie, who once warned Yoshiki about the dangers of "Hikaru," now uses her practical knowledge to shield him with a baseball cap and fend off attacking impurities.
Allies Revealed and Powers Unleashed
Another unexpected ally, the mysterious Tanaka, transitions from a dubious figure to a full-fledged supporter. He teams up with Yoshiki, Hikaru, and Asako Yamagishi—a classmate with her own supernatural gifts—to confront another breach. This volume’s split perspective highlights the unique abilities of each character, particularly in high-stakes situations.
Yuta’s Hidden Legacy
Yuta Maki, initially portrayed as an ordinary teenager, reveals a family connection to the supernatural. His grandfather and others once maintained a shrine dedicated to a divine serow, a tradition Yuta revives by cleaning the shrine and gifting Yoshiki an inherited charm to aid in their mission.
Rie’s Protective Measures
Rie Kurebayashi’s approach to impurity encounters is methodical and grounded. She prioritizes practical solutions, such as using a baseball cap to shield Yuta’s eyes and physically swatting away impurities during sealing rituals. Her actions underscore her role as both a protector and a voice of reason in the face of the unknown.
