Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken has not yet finalized a starting quarterback for the upcoming season, despite reports suggesting Deshaun Watson has emerged as the favorite over Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel.
In an interview on 92.3 The Fan this past Friday, Monken emphasized his preference to name a starter before training camp begins. However, he acknowledged that his current evaluation remains incomplete.
"I would love to have that. I'm not there yet, so I can’t say that. We've been on the field 3 practices. . . . What I’ve seen after three days, that gives us a 40,000-foot view of where we’re at, but that can change once we get back on the field. There's only so many reps you get, you've got to start to target towards who is gonna start opening day. That can still change. That can change, even if someone is gonna get two-thirds of the reps and someone's getting one-third of the reps because you're still gonna play preseason games."
Monken’s comments come after the Browns concluded their most recent minicamp, where Watson reportedly outperformed Sanders and Gabriel in quarterback evaluations. Despite the buzz, Monken stressed that early impressions are fluid and subject to change as the team progresses toward the regular season.
The Browns are scheduled to open training camp in late July, with the regular season kicking off in Week 1. Monken’s indecision underscores the competitive nature of the quarterback competition, which may not be resolved until preseason games provide clearer clarity.
