Donald Trump was in China this week for a series of meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. To cover the historic summit, major American broadcasters sent their newscasters overseas to broadcast from Beijing. Even Fox News managed to arrive and commit a parking violation.
Absent from the coverage was CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil, who appears to be enduring a streak of bad luck.
"Right now I'm just about 100 miles off the coast of mainland China," Dokoupil began Wednesday night’s broadcast from a hotel balcony in Taipei, Taiwan. While Taipei is geographically close to mainland China, it is 1,000 miles away from Beijing, where the summit was taking place.
The reason for Dokoupil’s unusual location? CBS failed to secure a visa for their anchor. Semafor’s Max Tani reported that CBS had to send Dokoupil to Taipei at the last minute as a result. This logistical failure follows a pattern of disruptions for Dokoupil, including Bari Weiss, CBS News editor-in-chief, who has previously interfered with his teleprompter and contributed to declining ratings.
Dokoupil’s troubles did not end upon arrival in Taipei. Wednesday night’s broadcast was abruptly cut short when his cameraman collapsed. CBS later confirmed the cameraman was unharmed.
