The Michigan Wolverines showed the nation how to win a national championship almost entirely through the transfer portal. A year ago, Michigan landed the top portal haul in college basketball, then marched through March Madness to cut down the nets. Critics called it ‘buying’ a title, but plenty of power-conference schools could have landed players like future NBA lottery pick Aday Mara, Morez Johnson, and Elliot Cadeau—they just didn’t execute the vision.
Building a great roster requires the right mix of roster retention and portal additions. Some contenders, like preseason No. 1 Illinois and the 2025 national champion Florida Gators, are leaning on continuity. Others are betting big on portal talent. Below are the nine teams assembling the strongest 2026 men’s classes through the transfer portal so far.
9. Providence Friars
- Miles Byrd (San Diego State) – Elite off-ball defender projected to generate turnovers.
- Arrinten Page (Northwestern) – Shot-blocking, rebounding interior presence with efficient scoring.
- Devin Vanterpool (Florida Atlantic) – Potential 3-and-D guard after two strong seasons at FAU.
- Gavin Hightower (South Florida) – Playmaking guard and pesky defender following new coach Bryan Hodgson.
- Samson Aletan (Yale) – Rim-running big.
- Ryan Sabol (Buffalo) – Frontcourt depth.
Providence fired Kim English and hired Bryan Hodgson from South Florida, immediately loading up on portal talent. Byrd headlines a group that should immediately improve the Friars’ defense and rebounding. Providence also lost key portal pieces, but the new mix under Hodgson has fans optimistic for a quick turnaround.
8. Missouri Tigers
- Bryson Tiller (Kansas) – Frontcourt depth and athleticism.
- Jamier Jones (Providence) – Efficient freshman scorer with strong foul-drawing ability.
- Jaylen Carey (Tennessee) – Guard depth and scoring.
Missouri made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances under Dennis Gates and is aiming for its first deep run. The Tigers added three portal pieces to a 2026 class that already includes McDonald’s All-Americans Jason Crowe (guard) and Toni Bryant (forward). Jones, a former top-50 recruit, showed promise as a freshman at Providence with efficient scoring and physicality at the rim. Tiller and Carey add athleticism and floor spacing.
7. Texas Longhorns
- Sean Miller (Head Coach) – Bringing veteran leadership and defensive identity.
- Portal Additions – Texas is finalizing a top-tier portal class led by elite guard and wing targets.
Texas, led by head coach Sean Miller, is assembling a championship-caliber portal class. Miller’s defensive acumen and experience developing NBA talent make the Longhorns a destination for high-level transfers. While specific names are still being finalized, the Longhorns are positioned to land multiple All-Academic and All-Defensive selections, reinforcing a culture of toughness and discipline.

How Portal Classes Shape the 2026 Season
The transfer portal has become the fastest path to contention. Teams that combine portal additions with smart roster retention—like Illinois and Florida—are setting the standard. For others, the portal offers a chance to reload quickly. Every addition changes the balance of power, and the teams listed above are making the most of their opportunities so far.
