Inflation Surges Amid Iran Conflict
Consumer prices rose 3.8% year-over-year in April, with a 0.6% increase last month alone. This marks a significant jump from the 2.4% year-over-year bump recorded in February, the last month before the war in Iran began. The spike in energy prices is the primary driver of inflation, a trend expected to persist as long as the Strait of Hormuz bottleneck remains unresolved.
Trump Family’s Mobile Venture Faces Scrutiny
In June 2024, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump launched Trump Mobile, a right-wing mobile phone service targeting MAGA supporters. The venture promised a bespoke, made-in-America smartphone, the T1, priced at $499. Customers were encouraged to pay a $100 deposit to preorder the device, with an initial shipping target of August 2024.
Over 500,000 people preordered the T1, funneling an estimated $59 million into Trump Mobile’s coffers. However, no phones have been delivered, and the company’s promises of American-made products have vanished. The launch date has repeatedly been delayed, raising concerns about the venture’s legitimacy.
Terms of Service Reveal the Scam
This week, Moneywise.com reported a critical update to Trump Mobile’s terms of service, revealing the true nature of the preorder deposits:
A preorder deposit provides only a conditional opportunity if Trump Mobile later elects, in its sole discretion, to offer the Device for sale. A deposit is not a purchase, does not constitute acceptance of an order, does not create a contract for sale, does not transfer ownership or title interest, does not allocate or reserve specific inventory, and does not guarantee that a Device will be produced or made available for purchase.
In other words, customers who paid the $100 deposit were misled into believing they were preordering a phone. Instead, they were simply providing the Trump family’s venture with capital, with no guarantee of ever receiving a device.
Public and Political Fallout
The news comes as inflation pressures mount, intensifying scrutiny on the Trump administration to address the energy crisis. Meanwhile, critics are questioning the Trump family’s business practices, with many accusing them of running a scam under the guise of a patriotic venture.
As of now, Trump Mobile has not issued a public statement addressing the allegations or providing updates on the status of preorders.
