The Washington Commanders have shown 'significant interest' in signing wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk if the San Francisco 49ers decide to release him, according to a report from Saturday. However, 49ers General Manager John Lynch made it clear that the team has no intention of releasing Aiyuk anytime soon.
Instead, the 49ers are actively seeking a trade for the talented but troubled receiver.
"No new update right now," Lynch said Saturday, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. "We're available. Give us a call."
Aiyuk last played in a game on October 20, 2024, when he suffered a devastating injury, tearing both his ACL and MCL in his right knee. The relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers deteriorated following the injury, particularly after the team voided the guaranteed money in his contract in November 2024 due to his refusal to rehab at their facility.
The 49ers have since moved on from Aiyuk, though he remains on the roster. Lynch emphasized that the team is in no rush to cut ties with the player, despite the strained relationship.
"He's an extremely talented player," Lynch said. "He's been an extremely effective player in our league. The situation didn't work itself out here. That's not to say that it can't be rekindled somewhere else. And we'd be happy to do something with anyone, if the opportunity presented itself."
When directly questioned about a potential timeline for Aiyuk's release, Lynch was unequivocal:
"Not anytime soon."
