Amazon MGM Unveils 2026-2027 Theatrical Slate: Highlander, Spaceballs Sequel, and More Big Releases

Amazon MGM Studios has officially unveiled its theatrical release slate for 2026 and 2027, following the box office success of Project Hail Mary, which grossed $515 million in theaters. While most titles are not expected to match that performance, the lineup includes several highly anticipated sequels and original films.

Amazon MGM’s Theatrical Strategy and Early Success

Earlier this year, Amazon MGM committed to releasing up to 14 films in theaters over the next year, allowing them to run for up to 45 days—a significant shift from its previous policy of limited releases. This strategy has already shown promising results.

"Four months. Four films. Over $670 million at the box office. And we have nine more on the way," said Kevin Wilson, head of domestic theatrical distribution at Amazon MGM.

Wilson emphasized that the company’s focus is not on volume but on impact, stating, "We are building films that give audiences a reason to leave the house. Films with scale. Ambition."

2026 Theatrical Release Schedule

The Sheep Detectives (May 8, 2026)

Kicking off the slate is The Sheep Detectives, a family-friendly film starring Hugh Jackman. The trailer has already amassed over 20 million views on YouTube, generating positive buzz and positioning it as a potential box office contender.

Masters of the Universe (June 5, 2026)

Directed by Travis Knight, Masters of the Universe brings the iconic world of Eternia to life. The film stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, and Idris Elba and is based on the Mattel toy franchise and animated series, appealing to both children and nostalgic parents.

How to Rob a Bank (September 4, 2026)

A heist comedy, How to Rob a Bank features a star-studded cast including Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz, Anna Sawai, Pete Davidson, and John C. Reilly. The film is set to hit theaters on September 4, 2026.

Verity (October 2, 2026)
