Amazon’s head of devices and services, Panos Panay, addressed fresh rumors about a potential smartphone launch, stating that the company is not necessarily planning to release a new device. However, he declined to rule out the possibility entirely.
Earlier reports had suggested Amazon was developing an Alexa-enabled AI phone codenamed "Transformer", a project that surfaced more than a decade after the company discontinued its ill-fated Fire Phone in 2014.
Panay’s Response to Smartphone Speculation
Speaking to the Financial Times, Panay was asked directly whether Amazon was preparing to launch another smartphone. His response was measured but firm:
"It's just not the goal."
"I know there's a lot of rumors out there."
He continued, acknowledging the persistent speculation:
"I think your black and white question is, are you going after a phone? A lot of people want me to say no, but a lot …"
The comments leave room for interpretation, reinforcing Amazon’s strategy of neither confirming nor fully dismissing the rumors.
