The Artemis II crew has once again made history by capturing a rare celestial event: an Earthset, where Earth vanishes behind the Moon. Commander Reid Wiseman has now shared a stunning video of this phenomenon, adding to the mission's legacy of groundbreaking observations.

While mission specialist Christina Koch used a Nikon camera to photograph the Earthset, Wiseman filmed the moment using an iPhone 17 Pro Max. He shared the video and his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter):

“I could barely see the Moon through the docking hatch window but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view… This is uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom which is quite comparable to the view of the human eye.”
Only one chance in this lifetime… Like watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos, I couldn’t resist a cell phone video of Earthset. You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as @Astro_Christina is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those… pic.twitter.com/8aWnaFJ69c

This Earthset marks the first time in 54 years that human eyes have witnessed such a phenomenon since the Apollo 17 mission. The Artemis II crew ventured more than 5,000 miles beyond the Moon, traveling over a quarter of a million miles from Earth—the farthest any humans have ever been from our planet.

The video has been widely praised for its awe-inspiring perspective. Wiseman described the moment as “genuinely awesome,” a sentiment echoed by many who have viewed the footage.
