In 1968, BMW introduced its seminal Neue Klasse models, achieving stability and scaling up its styling. The company repurposed its M10 four-cylinder engine to create a new inline-six for a larger sedan, known by the chassis code E3—the ancestor to today’s BMW 7 Series.
History is repeating itself with the 2027 BMW 7 Series, a major refresh of the seventh-generation G70 model that debuted in the U.S. as a 2023 vehicle. Unlike a typical refresh or BMW’s so-called “life cycle impulse” (LCI), this update is far more extensive.
The refreshed 7 Series incorporates technology and styling elements from BMW’s new Neue Klasse family of electric vehicles, which currently includes the iX3 crossover and i3 sedan.
While the updated 7 Series may lack the elegance of its E3 and E23 predecessors, the infusion of Neue Klasse details and other refinements significantly enhance its appearance. The rear bumper now features a cleaner design, and the front end has been simplified. The daytime running lights are now integrated into a streamlined arrangement above rectangular headlights, which are nestled in coves that also house the intakes for the front-wheel air curtains.
