California’s gubernatorial race has never had a clear frontrunner, according to David Dayen, executive editor of The American Prospect and a California resident. In the latest episode of Right Now With Perry Bacon, Dayen explains why the race remains unpredictable and confusing.

The absence of Kamala Harris as a candidate removed the party establishment’s obvious choice. Meanwhile, Former Representative Katie Porter has struggled to recover from viral videos depicting her mistreating staffers. Eric Swalwell exited the race—and Congress—amid multiple sexual misconduct allegations.

On the Republican side, Steve Hilton, a former Fox News commentator, is poised to advance to the general election after securing President Trump’s endorsement. His likely Democratic rival will be either Tom Steyer—a venture capitalist-turned-philanthropist—or Xavier Becerra, California’s former attorney general, U.S. House member, and Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The party establishment favors Becerra for his ideological alignment, but questions persist about his leadership. Progressives, while supportive of many of Steyer’s policy positions, remain hesitant to back a billionaire candidate.

The big question, Dayen notes, is which Democrat will ultimately face Hilton in the general election.
