The Los Angeles Chargers bolstered their defensive edge with a first-round selection on Thursday night, taking Ahkeem Mesidor with the 22nd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Mesidor’s selection followed that of his Miami Hurricanes teammate, Rueben Bain, who was chosen at No. 15 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The pair of edge rushers from Miami were both off the board early, marking a notable draft day for the Hurricanes.
Additionally, offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa was selected 10th overall by the New York Giants, bringing the total number of Miami players taken in the first round to three.
Mesidor, who recorded 12.5 sacks for Miami last season, brings experience to the Chargers’ defensive line. Having spent six years in college, he is older than many of his draft classmates, which may impact his long-term development but could also translate to immediate contributions.
In Los Angeles, Mesidor is expected to complement established edge rushers Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu, providing depth and rotational presence to the Chargers’ defensive front.
