Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor domestic battery charge on Thursday, according to the Kansas City Star.
Merritt, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, made his initial court appearance via Zoom. He requested court-appointed counsel, and a public defender entered the plea on his behalf.
Johnson County District Judge Wayne Smith set a $2,500 personal recognizance bond with the following conditions:
- No alcohol consumption
- No drug use
- No possession of firearms
- No contact with the alleged victim
Merritt was released from custody after posting bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 24.
On Thursday morning, the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office filed a complaint accusing Merritt of “unlawfully, knowingly, or recklessly” causing bodily harm to a daughter, which constitutes a domestic violence offense under Kansas law.
Merritt, 54, has served as the Chiefs’ defensive backs coach since 2019. His NFL coaching career includes stops with the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, and New York Jets, as well as multiple college assistant coaching positions. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 1993 NFL Draft and played briefly before transitioning to coaching.
