When the Kansas City Chiefs selected LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier with the 249th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the moment marked a significant shift from his first-round projections just a year prior. Yet, Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach had a clear message for the rookie: he was joining the best quarterback room in the NFL.

"I know it's been a long day, but just know that you're going to head to the best quarterback room in the NFL here," Veach told Nussmeier in a video released by the Chiefs. "We're going to turn this pick in now and make you the newest member of the Kansas City Chiefs."

Nussmeier will now train alongside NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes, backup quarterback Justin Fields, and will be coached by Head Coach Andy Reid and Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy. The latter brings firsthand experience working with Nussmeier, having served as UCLA’s offensive coordinator in 2024 when Nussmeier led LSU to a 34-17 victory over the Bruins. In that game, Nussmeier threw for 352 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

"Last time I saw you, I was on the opposite sideline at UCLA. You had a pretty good game against us. I'm very proud of you and looking forward to having this opportunity to work with you."

While Nussmeier acknowledges he won’t immediately compete for the Chiefs’ starting job, he is joining a quarterback room designed for growth and development. The opportunity to learn from Mahomes and Reid, two of the most respected figures in the league, positions Nussmeier to refine his skills and, eventually, prove he can fulfill the first-round potential he showed at LSU.
