Cleveland Browns Focus on Developing Taylen Green's Passing Fundamentals

The Cleveland Browns are prioritizing quarterback Taylen Green’s development after selecting him in the sixth round of the draft, following their fifth-round pick of Shedeur Sanders in 2023.

Green, widely regarded for his elite physical talent, is now focused on mastering the fundamentals of passing under coach Todd Monken’s guidance.

During a recent press briefing, Monken outlined the Browns’ immediate priorities for Green:

• Footwork: Establishing proper mechanics at the line of scrimmage.
• Cadence: Adjusting to the team’s offensive rhythm, which Green has shown gradual improvement in.
• Release Mechanics: Tightening his throwing motion to reduce predictability and exposure to pass rush.

“Well, first thing was . . . footwork,” Monken told reporters on Saturday. “Cadence — getting used to our cadence early on, and he was better today, but [Saturday] morning and [Friday], choppy with his cadence. So just getting our guys into a rhythm at the line of scrimmage, I think that was the second thing he needed to work on.”

Monken also praised Green’s ability to process plays and progress through his reads, calling it “really impressive.” However, he stressed the urgency of refining Green’s release to prevent defensive backs from anticipating throws and pass rushers from disrupting plays.

A long release poses significant challenges at the NFL level. It not only telegraphs throws, making it easier for defenders to react, but also extends the window for pass rushers to apply pressure. Breaking years of ingrained muscle memory is difficult, but Monken believes Green’s adaptability and work ethic could overcome these hurdles.

Despite these challenges, Green’s potential remains untapped. If the Browns successfully polish his fundamentals, he could emerge as a dynamic offensive weapon for the team.
