Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson returned to team activities on Monday after a two-week absence during which he pursued a potential trade. Richardson, who is recovering from a right eye injury, attended the Colts' voluntary workouts despite his uncertain future with the team.
Head coach Shane Steichen addressed Richardson’s status on Friday but declined to provide definitive answers about his long-term role.
"He’s back in the fold right now. That part’s been good," Steichen said via James Boyd of TheAthletic.com. "He’s working, going through his fundamentals, details, out there throwing with the guys. And that’s where it’s at right now."
Selected No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Richardson lost the starting job to Daniel Jones last season. While Richardson continues to seek a trade, Boyd reported that he is approaching the situation with professionalism.
Steichen avoided speculation about whether Richardson would compete with Riley Leonard, a 2025 sixth-round draft pick, for the backup quarterback role behind Jones.
"Right now, we’re in May. We’ll see how it goes, obviously, with all that," Steichen said. "But [Richardson’s] working. He’s here. He’s in good spirits. He’s cleared to play with the vision stuff, so that part’s good."
Richardson suffered a fractured orbital bone in his right eye during a freak pregame accident on October 12, 2024.
