Washington Commanders rookie linebacker Sonny Styles, selected seventh overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, is poised to play a significant role for the team this season. One aspect of his role—potentially wearing the green dot helmet—will be determined in the coming weeks during training camp.

During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn discussed Styles' unique background and how it could benefit the team. Quinn noted that Styles brings "unique traits" to the linebacker position, as he began his collegiate career at Ohio State as a defensive back.

Quinn explained that Styles' football acumen allows the Commanders to deploy him in multiple ways, including as the player with the green dot on his helmet. This designation enables the player to hear real-time play calls from coaches and relay them to teammates on the field. "In practice, we’ll certainly consider that," Quinn said. "A number of guys will have it during the practice time. He is definitely capable of that. It's one of the nice things now with the guys already doing that in college."

Styles' physical tools and versatility suggest he will see significant playing time, reinforcing his potential to become a defensive cornerstone for Washington. His ability to wear the green dot would further enhance his value as a rookie, providing the Commanders with added flexibility in their defensive schemes.
