This summer, the animated series 'My Adventures with Superman' returns for its third season, bringing with it a formidable new foe: the Cyborg Superman.
The announcement, shared alongside the season’s premiere date, confirms that the villain will take center stage in the upcoming episodes. Showrunner Jake Wyatt revealed the identity of the antagonist in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, stating,
"We’re Cyborg Superman right out the gate."
Wyatt emphasized that the portrayal of the Cyborg Superman will differ significantly from prior adaptations.
"It’s not gonna be a retread of the comics," he noted. "We’re digesting Reign of the Supermen."
For context, Reign of the Supermen is a landmark 1990s DC Comics storyline that introduced multiple characters claiming to be the real Superman following his death in Superman #75 (1992). The story, titled Funeral for a Friend, explored Metropolis’ grief before revealing four distinct figures: John Henry Irons, the new Superboy, the Eradicator, and the Cyborg Superman.
The Cyborg Superman, later revealed to be Hank Henshaw, was an explorer who sought revenge on Superman by altering his appearance and infiltrating the public’s trust. His actions led to the destruction of cities, including Coast City, paving the way for the villain Mongul. The storyline culminated in the real Superman’s return, clad in a black suit and a mullet.
Despite the historical significance of Reign of the Supermen, Wyatt assured fans that My Adventures with Superman will not revisit Superman’s death—a narrative already explored in series like Smallville, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Superman & Lois. Instead, the show will remain within its own continuity, which already includes Hank Henshaw, introduced in season 2 as a researcher at S.T.A.R. Labs.
Wyatt described the season’s approach as
"less Death and more about, ‘What’s a Superman?’"The series will focus on exploring the Man of Steel’s identity and legacy, offering a fresh perspective on the iconic character.
