The NFL Draft is often called the world’s longest—and strangest—job interview. It’s also known, with a wink, as “lying season.”

Until teams finalize their picks, every word is scrutinized. Teams negotiate trades, agents boost player profiles, and rumors swirl—sometimes fueled by teams leaking negative information to manipulate draft positioning. This year, however, the Dallas Cowboys bucked the trend with an unusually candid pre-draft statement.

Moments before their pre-draft press conference on April 22, 2026, the Cowboys’ PR team tweeted:

"What you're about to hear may be truthful. It may not be truthful."

Such transparency stood out in an era where draft speculation is often shrouded in calculated ambiguity.

Later that day, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones addressed the media, revisiting a pivotal moment from the 2020 draft. Dallas had prioritized defense but ultimately selected CeeDee Lamb, a move Jones defended:

"That's alive and well. Given the right circumstances, you have to look at offense."

With the 2026 draft approaching, Jones’ remarks hinted at a potential shift in strategy—one that could prioritize offensive talent over defensive needs.
